ABOUT WHACK

WHACK is all about supporting women in tech. Spend a weekend with us and dozens of undergraduate students from throughout the New England area and build something amazing. At WHACK, we want you to think out of the box, experiment with new technologies, ask questions, make mistakes, learn something new, and have fun! We believe that good mentorship and teamwork are essential, so your team will be given a professional mentor who will guide and support you. Whether you’re a seasoned developer or designer, or just starting out as a beginner, WHACK has something to offer you.



This year our theme is hacking for social good. We are partnering with non-profits to develop technological solutions to their biggest challenges. Our three main tracks are Education, Health, and Accessibility. Join us for one impactful weekend!

FAQ

What is a hackathon?
It’s a grand gathering of people to make their ideas come to life. Think out of the box, try new technologies, ask questions, make mistakes, discover a new language, and have fun! We will be following Major League Hacking's Code of Conduct.
What if I have ZERO experience?
That’s absolutely fine! We encourage beginners to join us. Get psyched to learn a ton from our mentors and have a blast with your teammates!
Is this event only for women?
This event is geared towards women, but we welcome all. Keep in mind that we are looking to create a safe space. If you have any questions about this, please contact us!
How does mentorship at WHACK work?
We believe that good mentorship and teamwork are essential. Each team of 3-5 undergraduate students is paired with a professional mentor who will provide guidance for the entire weekend.
Can I hack with my friends?
Our aim is to strengthen the network of women in CS, and we hope to achieve this by creating random teams where each team will have an experienced mentor. If you MUST hack with a friend, please stipulate so in the registration form, and we'll do our best to accommodate!
Why social good?
At WHACK, we believe in the power of technology to change the world for the better. We want to cultivate a community that is passionate about social change, and builds projects with a meaningful social impact in mind.
How will you decide who is able to attend?
Applicants will be chosen based on a weighted random lottery. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to apply and attend!
Will travel costs be reimbursed?
Unfortunately, we currently cannot provide reimbursements for travel costs. However, all food and housing will be provided during WHACK.
Do I need to have a finished project by the end?
Ideally you'd have a finished/close-to-finished project by Sunday. If you don't finish, not a bad thing! We won't catapult you to Pluto. Ultimately, this is a learning experience, and we want this to be fun for everyone!
What if I can only come for part of the weekend?
Due to the large volume of applicants WHACK receives, we give priority to applicants who can commit their entire weekend. If you have a conflict, please stipulate it on your registration form, and we will do our best to accommodate special circumstances.
